Japanese Architect Riken Yamamoto awarded the Pritzker Prize

(Construction) - Renowned Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto has been awarded the prestigious Pritzker Prize, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Architecture.

The announcement was made by the Hyatt Foundation on March 5th. Yamamoto, known for his diverse portfolio ranging from large-scale structures to individual residences both domestically and internationally, was particularly commended for his approach to architectural spaces emphasizing community values. The award ceremony and laureate lecture will be held in Chicago on May 16th. Yamamoto becomes the ninth Japanese laureate of the prize, following Shigeru Ban in 2019.

Born in 1945, Yamamoto graduated from the Architecture Department of Nihon University in 1968 and completed his postgraduate studies in architecture at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1971. He established his practice Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop in 1973. His portfolio includes projects such as Saitama Prefectural University, Future University Hakodate, Shinonome Canal Court CODAN, and Tianjin Library in China. Among his recent works is Nagoya Zokei University.

Yamamoto has also served as a professor at institutions such as Kogakuin University and the Graduate School of Yokohama National University, and from 2018 to 2022, he held the position of president at Nagoya Zokei University. He currently serves as a visiting professor at Tokyo University of the Arts.

The jury cited Yamamoto's ability to evolve projects by learning from history and different cultures, as well as creating awareness in the community in response to societal demands, as reasons for his selection. (2024/03/07)
