Japan’s Environment Ministry announces ZEB ready certification for revamped headquarters

(Construction) - On April 2nd, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan announced that the newly refurbished headquarters in the former Japan Post headquarters building in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo has obtained ZEB Ready certification.

The refurbishment includes comprehensive insulation through the adoption of multi-layer vacuum glass and the implementation of cutting-edge high-efficiency air conditioning and automated control systems. It is the first government building in Japan to install solar panels, including building-integrated materials. Additionally, efforts have been made to actively utilize wood and use environmentally friendly concrete in the exterior. The relocation is scheduled for the fiscal year 2027.

The new headquarters has 13 floors above ground and 2 basement levels, with a total floor area of 50,507 square meters. The Ministry has collaborated extensively with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to aim for the highest possible environmental performance rank to ensure the building is fitting for its role as a flagship for environmental administration.
