Taisei and TechShare launch autonomous charging system for Multi-Model Robots at construction sites

(Construction) - Japanese construction company Taisei Corporation and Tokyo-based robot maker TechShare have developed an automated charging system called "T-ChargeX" for various models of robots in construction settings.

This system, featuring a mobile six-axis robotic arm stand, is compatible with robots from different manufacturer. The companies have successfully tested T-ChargeX at a construction site in the capital region, confirming its operational viability.

The T-ChargeX system operates by automatically initiating power transfer when a robot, with battery levels below a set threshold, approaches the mobile six-axis arm stand. The system identifies the appropriate socket-type power terminal for each robot model and extends the arm to connect with the robot, seamlessly beginning the charging process.

The system utilizes augmented reality markers, affixed to each robot for visual recognition, enabling the automated selection of the suitable power terminal. The six-axis arm then securely holds the socket terminal and connects it to the robot’s power port, allowing for autonomous charging. Currently, T-ChargeX is compatible with two types of cleaning robots, a quadruped robot, and a transport robot.

According to Taisei Corporation, extending battery life and enabling automated charging have been longstanding challenges in the deployment of construction robots. While some robot manufacturers have developed autonomous charging devices, these are often tailored to specific models, requiring a unique charging unit for each. Taisei and TechShare's new system addresses this limitation, providing a unified solution adaptable to multiple robot types. (2024/10/28)
