Japan’s Obayashi getting ready for 3D Printed Building in practical use

10:04 | 06/12/2022

(Construction) - Japanese construction company Obayashi Corporation unveiled a demonstration building being constructed using a 3D printer at its technical research center in Tokyo.

The printer, equipped with a robotic arm, is installed on top of the foundation, and a special mortar is used to construct a multi-layered wall that also serves as a formwork. The walls will be filled with room-temperature cured ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete. Printing of the walls began in August and is approximately 60% complete. The structure is scheduled for completion in February 2023.

The 3D printed building is a single-story structure with an area of approximately 27 square meters with a maximum height of approximately 4.2 meters, including the parapet. It will feature a design that makes extensive use of curved surfaces, and will be equipped with air conditioning, lighting, washrooms, and other facilities. It is the first 3D printer building using cement-based materials in Japan to be certified by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism under the Building Standards Law.

Director of the technical research center said, "We have reached the point where we can put the 3D printer to practical use in a full-scale building equipped with air conditioning and lighting. In the future, we intend to expand the application of the 3D printer to civil engineering as well as to highly designed parts of the building.” (2022/11/21)
