Japan’s Kajima to Use Low Carbon Steel Materials at New Construction in Tokyo

08:33 | 23/01/2023

(Construction) - Japanese construction company Kajima Corporation will use steel materials made by blast furnace that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the steelmaking process for a construction project in Tokyo.

The materials are made with a 100% reduction of CO2 emissions during manufacturing by the mass balance method. The entire supply chain of the construction materials will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Kobenable Steel, the first low-CO2 blast furnace steel products in Japan developed by Kobe Steel, will be used for a portion of the steel frame. The amount of coke used is reduced by replacing a portion of the iron ore with HBI, a reduced steel raw material. CO2 emissions from blast furnaces can be reduced by approximately 20%. It is now possible to provide low-CO2 steel products while maintaining the conventional quality.

Furthermore, Kobenable Premier, which uses a mass balance method to reduce CO2 emissions during manufacturing by 100%, will be used at the site. Skyscrapers are required to decarbonize, and there is a growing need to reduce CO2 emissions from building materials in construction work and to use products with low CO2 emissions when manufacturing the steel frame used in the building.
