(Construction) - Japanese construction company Kajima and industrial equipment maker Nikkiso have begun joint project to develop an air conditioning system called “Stela UVC," which specializes in the removal of bacteria and viruses.

Nikkiso's high-quality deep ultraviolet LEDs will be installed on Kajima's air conditioning system. The system efficiently irradiates circulating air with deep ultraviolet rays (100-280 nm) to remove bacteria and viruses from the air and purify indoor air. It creates a comfortable indoor space by removing small bacteria and viruses that are difficult to collect with commercial air conditioning filters.
Stela UVC is a air conditioning system that incorporates a duct-connected UV unit. Kajima is responsible for the development of the entire air conditioning system, while Nikkiso will be in charge of development of the UV unit that forms the core of the system. The UV unit equipped with a deep ultraviolet LED will be incorporated into the process of circulating room air by connecting filters with ducts, which is the mechanism of a typical air conditioning system. The circulating air is directly irradiated with deep ultraviolet rays to sterilize the indoor air.
A concept model has already been installed in an office building that opened in Minato Mirai 21, Yokohama, in September 2021. In the future, the companies plan to add products with the large airflow range that can be used in large commercial buildings to its product lineup, and will propose these products for both new construction and renovation.
