Government of Japan holds groundbreaking ceremony to build Japan Pavilion for Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025

(Construction) - The groundbreaking ceremony for the Japanese Government Pavilion, the main facility for the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 was held on September 11 at the site in Yumeshima, Konohana-ku, Osaka City.

The ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, was attended by about 100 government and construction officials. The pavilion will be a facility that takes into account the cycles of people, animals, plants, and other life forms, and expresses the theme of the Expo, "Designing Future Society for Our Lives”. Mr. Oki Sato, general producer of the pavilion said, "We will convey the cycle of life. I hope visitors will experience the traditions and charm of Japan.”

Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Toshiro Toyoda who attended the ceremony said, "The government pavilion is the face of the Expo and the base for presenting the theme. It is important that the construction work be carried out in a safe manner. I ask for the continued support of all parties involved.”

The pavilion will be used for the Japanese government's exhibition projects and will be constructed as a long-term temporary building to serve as a reception facility for dignitaries from various countries. It will be a facility that encourages people to change their behavior in consideration of the global environment and biodiversity.

The structure is a composite of steel and cross laminated timber, with three stories above ground and a total floor area of 11,352 square meters. Shimizu Corporation will construct the building and it was designed by Nikken Sekkei. It is expected to be completed by the end of February 2025. (2023/09/12)
