The contractors Kajima and Sumitomo Electric have been placing large-diameter steel pipe piles, called "monopiles," using a SEP (Self-Elevating Platform) vessel since April. As of the end of July, the installation of more than 80% of the planned 33 piles has been finished, and is scheduled to complete this autumn. A total of 33 wind turbines with 117-meter-diameter blades will be constructed in Akita and Noshiro ports. The total output will be 138.6 megawatts. The entire project is expected for completion in December 2022. Kajima will install the monopiles and connecting components, and undertake preventive works for scouring of the seabed, while Sumitomo Electric is in charge of placing submarine cables.

Kajima has been using the SEP vessel Zaratan, which is owned by the Japanese subsidiary of the British company Seajacks, equipped with an 800-ton crane. With Seajacks’ expertise in wind farm installation and Kajima’s experience in marine construction, the monopiles weighing 360 to 880 tons each are being smoothly installed. Particular attention was paid to the accuracy of the piles. A manager at Kajima’s Renewable Energy Department says, "We consider it important to proceed the work as quickly as possible, safely and without accident.” (2021/08/20)
