He stressed the significance of DX in the sense that it will lead to a change in the work styles of both contractors and project owners, saying, "We will aim to improve the efficiency of operations by getting rid of written documents and switching to digital based communications. He also expressed his intention to encourage the use of the DX-related facilities that opened at the regional development bureaus.
The ministry, the regional development bureaus, and the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM) will work together to apply DX in construction. The new office led by Mr. Morito will "take the initiative for the utilization of 3D data, including the application of BIM principles by 2023. The Development Bureau will be positioned as a place of practice, encouraging the introduction and verification of digital technology at construction sites.
He encouraged construction companies to "follow our lead," and believes that promoting DX will be the key to improving operations for contractors as well. With small- and medium-sized businesses and local contractors in mind, he also sees challenges: "We need to lower the hurdles as much as possible, such as the cost of equipment and lack of skills in digital tools.
