The plant utilizes geothermal heat and biomass resources such as wood. The company aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production to less than one-tenth of commercially available hydrogen, and to reduce production costs to less than one-third of water electrolysis hydrogen using renewable energy. The company plans to utilize the know-how gained from the project to develop a commercial plant for use in small- and medium-sized geothermal power plants.

A ceremony was held on July 28th to mark the start of the project. Hydrogen is produced using cedar chip wood and geothermal water steam. The plant will be verified for stable operation in terms of quality and safety. The plant consists of a wood chip carbonization furnace, a reforming reactor to gasify the carbide, and a hydrogen purification system, with a hydrogen production capacity of 50 normal cubic meters per hour. Green hydrogen with a purity of 9.999% or higher is extracted and produced. The 1,070-degree Celsius gas generated in the production process is used as a heat source to reduce the amount of electricity used. The surplus high-temperature waste heat can be sold to a heat source for geothermal power generation, thereby significantly reducing the production cost. (2022/07/29)
